Chapter 17
âNot a trace of the good doctor today. Must be very busy with his fancy, Harley Street clientele. How is our handsome fellow?â
Abstracted, Martha looked up briefly from mixing a medicinal draught. âMr. Bridges?â
Annie Kelly snorted out a laugh. âNot hardly, I refer to our patient here. My doesnât he look improved! Iâd tuck my shoes under his bed anytime.â
âYou are a terrible sinner.â
âNo. Actually, I am an excellent sinner. Would you like some hot buttered bread and tea?â
âYes, that sounds wonderful.â
Mark reached out his hand. âI would slay a dragon for a cup of coffee.â
âOho, never tell me you are awake!â Annie Kelly covered her face. âNow Iâm ever so embarrassed.â Her voice trailed off when she peeked and saw the two people before her seemed to have eyes only for each other. âI said, I am ever so⦠never mind. Shall I go ahead and get the tea and coffee then? Martha? Martha, I seem to have amputated my hand, shall I stick it back on?â
âWhatever you think best.â Marthaâs eyes sparkled with joy. A grinning Sister Kelly walked from the room, shaking her head.
âYouâve had a nice rest. How are you feeling?â
âAnother douse of laudanum? You really must stop. My brain is all cotton fuzz.â
âAll right, I promise you no more laudanum, besides your color is better, your pain seems more manageable now â is it?â
âAbsolutely.â
âAh. Then I do believe youâre well on your way to recovery.â She sounded very professional to herself, not at all regretful.
âI wish you hadnât allowed me to sleep so long, I was enjoying our talks.â
âDo you even remember what they were about?â
âNo. I merely know I was listening to you and enjoying myself. Did you mean what you said?â
âAbout what?â
âYou find me handsome, and youâd tuck your shoes under my bed any time.â
âSister Kelly is the one with the sinful shoes. Butâ¦â Feeling her loneliness for him already, she took his hand in hers and kissed it. âI should not say this, but if I were to tuck my shoes under any manâs bed, it would be yours.â
His eyelids lowered with desire. âI want more than your shoes in my bed⦠Damn me, that didnât sound as romantic as Iâd hoped.â
She smiled at him. âI understand.â
âDo you? I donât believe you really do. Allow me to speak plainly, my angel. I am in love with you.â
She stared at him for a long while. âNonsense, we donât even know each other. Please donât say such things. You may have a wife, children.â
âIt doesnât matter. Heaven forgive me but, I canât stay away from you.â Cupping the back of her head he urged her lips down to his, slowly tasting them, nibbling until her mouth parted. She moaned with pleasure. It was heaven. Sheâd never felt such a desire for a man, such need.
Her head angled for deeper, more urgent kisses. âThis isnât right,â she whimpered against his lips.
âBloody hell it isnât,â he was becoming more aggressive, more insistent. His hand began
